The Weather of the Mind
Over the last few weeks, my mind has felt closer to the energy of the Eight and Nine of Swords tarot cards. On the Eight of Swords, a woman is blindfolded and bound, seemingly stuck with no way out. On the Nine of Swords, someone sits up in bed with their head in their hands, surrounded by darkness.
Keywords that come to mind for these cards are powerlessness, confusion, worry, and anguish. One reminder I’ve returned to again and again is that the mind is like the weather—sometimes the storms come out of nowhere, and all you can do is ride it out and remember the impermanence of things.
My mental fog has been largely down to some recent health news I’m still processing (I may have ME, but I’ll share more on that in time), alongside the financial pressure so many of us are feeling right now.
Despite this, I’m grateful that my practices remain intact. I still meditate, reconnect with my purpose, treat myself with compassion, journal, move my body, and lean on my friends for support.
It’s worth remembering that we’re human, not machines. And I suppose I’m sharing this to say: even after doing a lot of inner work, difficult days—and sometimes weeks—still happen. The difference is, they don’t hit as hard or last as long as they once did.
I’ve been paying close attention to any unhelpful narratives and doing my best to interrupt them early. Rather than stewing, I find a balance between taking action and sitting with what’s there. Action has always been the best healer in my life.
