Stop idolising
Brene Brown is known to say, “People, people, people”. She means that we all have strengths, weaknesses, flaws, etc.
We all do good and bad deeds. In some situations, we can keep our cool, whilst, in other situations, we lose our shit.
Sometimes, we forget that we are all human.
None of these are excuses for people who are not very nice, but you catch my drift.
I’m sharing this with you because I was recently talking to a fellow spiritual practitioner about how so many of us, us included, curate a specific image on social media and websites.
We are all so calm, still and peaceful, right? Don’t get me wrong, I’m pretty good at remaining calm and approaching life with a sense of lightness, but I can also complain and express frustration.
The tricky bit is that people come to work with us because, to an extent, we embody character traits they would like to obtain. Most often, our more “favourable” traits. And there is nothing wrong with communicating those and sharing it. We are, after all, on a mission to build a calmer and more wholesome world.
At least I am.
At the same time, the danger begins when we start to idolise our role models, as they are complex human beings with bad hair days.
There is certainly a responsibility on us as practitioners to communicate that we also have bad days whilst also retaining the aspirational aspects of ourselves.
But people who look to us for advice must also not idolise and think we are flawless because that could not be further away from the truth. That is not authentic, and it's an exhausting image to uphold.
Take me, for example; I have recently shared very openly about my nocturia and the chronic fatigue that leads to it and also shared the strategies I use to manage that and build a deeper understanding of why I have that condition.
So, I am far from “perfect” when it comes to my physical health, but I do everything within my ability to heal and reduce the symptoms.
So, stop idolising, embrace the messiness of being human, take everything online with a pinch of salt and do what you can to show up at your best.
