Critiquing the notion of keeping up with the Joneses is not new, nor has the tendency to do so gone away. Clearly, it needs repeating. We see this way of being very much alive with celebrity culture, people standing in queues for hours to buy a pair of shoes or the latest iPhone, and I realise what I’m going to say next is a bit harsh, but what a waste of life force energy.
We are only here in the earthly realm for a limited time in this incarnation, and more of us, myself included need to become more intentional about we spend that precious energy. Because it is precious.
Theodore Roosevelt famously said, that comparison truly is the thief of joy.
Yung Pueblo says, to be so grounded in your own vibe that you stop adopting other people’s energy.
Henry David Thoreau brilliantly said, the soul grows by subtraction, not addition.
Yes, we are social beings and will inevitably compare ourselves to our fellow human beings. Even so, when it happens, we need to pause and lean into self-compassion. To know that we have our own strengths and way through life. We don’t need to be anyone else or use them as a benchmark for success. We have no idea what is going on under the surface.
Trying to be anyone else is a fruitless quest because you will never be them. It will only lead to anger, frustration and bitterness. Take responsibility for what you can do to make the most out of your life and the life force energy you have to offer, and leave the rest.
What anyone else is doing is not your problem.
Through practice, create your own depth and presence, and over time, people will notice that and be attracted to that depth of presence and life force energy.
Journaling prompt
In what areas of my life am I wasting time worrying about stuff that is out of my control?
In what areas of my life can I take more control?
In what areas of my life can I let go of control?
How can I authentically embodie my life force energy and channel that into the world?
I have a love-hate relationship with David Goggins, but he is the master of spending his time wisely. He was recently interviewed on Modern Wisdom. It is still definitely worth a listen.
I have a love-hate relationship with Modern Wisdom too. Nonetheless, there is some wisdom to glean from listening to Goggins, albeit it he on the extreme side.
Sound as a healing modality is taking up more and more space in my life. I recently created another soundscape. Have a listen, and let me know what you think!
