Reflections on anxiety
Everybody has it. Anxiety comes for all of us, myself included. Throughout the day, I often catch myself having full-length conversations with people who have irritated or upset me before in my head. Sometimes, this is helpful as it prepares me for a challenging conversation, but sometimes, it teeters on rumination, which helps no one.
There is always a solution. Recently, my mantra is that when I feel anxious about something in the future, I tell myself there is always a solution. It might not be what I want, but there is always a way, and I must take action to bring the solution forward.
Embrace discomfort. In my case, anxiety is often rooted in needing to have a difficult conversation with someone, or at least I’m assuming that it will be challenging. Here, we must embrace the discomfort because by not going ahead with the difficult conversation, we are making it worse and perhaps even bringing resentment. The key is to surround yourself with people with whom you can have open-hearted, vulnerable, difficult talks.
Feeling anxious is normal. Approach your anxiety with curiosity. It is hardwired into us as a means of survival. Something is clearly going on, so instead of shaming yourself for feeling anxious, sit with it, try to understand where it is coming from, and take action to resolve it.
Move your body. I often find that when I’m feeling anxious, moving helps me shift it and let it go. Further, a change in the environment also benefits. Go from one room to another.
Talk to someone. We are, myself included, masters at making storms in a teacup. I often find that when I confide in a friend I trust, the anxiety lessons.
