My current mantra
My current mantra is: “I create my own peace”. You might find this silly, but nearly every morning, I write down that sentence first in my diary.
I create my own peace.
By writing it down, I remind myself that I have agency regarding how I spend my time, energy, and money and how I respond to the world around me.
We so easily forget that we have agency. We think it is easier to give away our power to someone else, and in the short term, that might seem better, but in the long term, it often only turns into resentment.
Short-term pain for long-term gain. Rip of that bandage.
We are so easily persuaded to join others, to live their lifestyle, when actually, authentically, within ourselves, we want to live starkly differently.
That is not to say that there is anything wrong with someone else’s lifestyle; it is just that it might be different from yours, which is okay. Many of us, myself included, seek validation in how we live in other people. We want to feel accepted, seen, heard and told that there is nothing wrong with how we live.
It is a very natural behaviour; we are social human beings, after all. Even so, it is so vital that we balance this out with validating ourselves.
Because the thing is, many people will dislike the way you live. Their values, life philosophy, upbringing and so on will be different to yours. And that is okay!
Managing someone else’s perception is nearly impossible. So why even bother?
Validate yourself, have confidence in yourself, and surround yourself with people who allow you to be your most authentic self without trying to persuade you to be different. They are the best kind of people.
