Mental Health Awareness Week
My life has been a bit chaotic over the last month, so I have been quiet here. Towards the end of April, I went to LA for a week. I had a fabulous time and moved into a new flat in Clapham, which has been a positive change.
I also began working at another healing studio in London called Sacred Tones, and then Mental Health Awareness Week kicked off with lots of sessions. So, all good stuff. No complaints, it’s just a lot to stay on top of at one when you run your service all by yourself.
As I said, this week was mental health awareness week, and I had the pleasure of holding space at several organisations.
On the topic of mental health, data regarding our population’s mental health is worsening, not improving. In my view, there needs to be societal systemic changes to improve our mental health, and we need to do what we can on an individual level in the meantime.
For me, the two areas of my life where I feel my mental health takes a real hit are when I feel my finances are going on a downward spiral and I’m in a romantic relationship that is not healthy for me.
On a societal level, we need systemic changes, such as a government that properly supports people who are struggling, not taking it away, as we saw them do recently. In addition, they need to do something about the cost-of-living crisis.
Moreover, companies need to change their business model somehow away from constant scale and growth at the cost of their employees’ mental health. The workloads are literally burning people out.
I understand that all of this is incredibly complex and not that clean-cut; at the same time, many more people need to work towards having a philosophical change within them about why we are here and how we should spend our time.
Governments and organisations are, after all, made up of people.
On a personal level, we need to move away from the need for constant consumption, entertainment, and stimulation. Yes, these are cultural norms that are literally programmed into us, but at the same time, we do have some agency in creating changes and designing a better life for ourselves. I understand that many factors come into play here, too. Nonetheless, we can make a change.
We must allocate time to slow down and connect more profoundly with our mind, body, and spirit. We must be more considerate and intentional with how we spend our life force while in the earthly realm.
Say yes to more stillness.
“The soul grows by subtraction, not addition.”
