Everyone—and I mean everyone—will have an opinion about your life and how you should live it. But does that mean you need to take their opinion seriously?
No, it does not.
I hear this from clients all the time: “But what would X, Y, or Z think?”
I get it. It can be especially difficult if you’re financially dependent on someone. But unless the person giving you their opinion has built a life you admire, you don’t need to take their viewpoint as truth.
This limiting belief is one of the biggest blockages preventing people from creating the life they truly want. Yes, of course, it’s multifactorial. But when you strip everything back, more often than not, this is the false belief we’re left with.
We’re social beings, so the need for validation is understandable. Even so, work on minimising it.
That said, this isn’t carte blanche to be an awful human being, driven by an unhealthy ego—absolutely not.
Instead, we should develop a strong sense of personal ethics rooted in self-awareness, not in religious or societal traditions that impose a rigid sense of morality.
Build your own. And try not to judge others too harshly for theirs, as long as they are not doing actual harm, then it is fair game.
Personally, I would always promote liberal values such as equality, freedom, pluralism, tolerance, compassion, social justice and open debate.
