I am sure I am not alone in sensing that chaos is reaching new levels across the world right now. Every day, when we open a news site or even just Instagram, another devastating event seems to have occurred.
So, what do we do in times like these, when our nervous system feels fried and overwhelm comes on much quicker?
First, we acknowledge and recognise that it is happening. We don’t try to ignore it or push it under the carpet. However, we also shouldn’t let it ruin our daily lives by dwelling on things we cannot change.
Instead, we double down on what we can improve—our inner sanctuary, our calm within. I am reminded of the saying: "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me."
I only agree with this in part because words can cause true harm. However, by not taking things too personally and practising non-attachment, we can lessen their impact. Can we remove it entirely? No, but we can certainly reduce it.
Often, the reason words harm us is because we feel insecure and take things too personally when we shouldn’t.
I recently found myself doing exactly that—taking something too personally. On reflection, I could have handled the situation differently. At the same time, there are moments when we do need to set firm boundaries, especially when someone consistently oversteps. Our life is precious, and one of the most powerful ways to improve it is by being clear on who gets access to us and who does not.
The way to cultivate our inner sanctuary is, as always, through meditation. In meditation, we can release heavy energies, gain new perspectives, and receive divine guidance on how to move forward.
THE PRACTICE
With your eyes closed, regularly practice visualising a calming beach, a soothing garden, or a serene meadow.
You can also choose any scene that brings you peace and relaxation.
Beyond meditation, I also believe that being of service—to others and to the world—generates a sense of goodness within us, strengthening our inner calm and resilience.
