Create your own standards
This last week, I had COVID-19 for the third time, and I turned 33. Each time I had COVID-19, it hit me pretty hard. I have never felt so weak and tired in my entire life. For me, it is definitely not a cold.
Reflecting on that, I’m now 33. By some standards, I should now have a house, a car, and maybe even two kids. I have none of those things. I’m still renting, single, and do not have a stable income.
And as I write that, I smile.
I really like my life. I get to explore, find meaning in my work, and pursue the activities I enjoy. Perhaps that makes me selfish; I don’t know, but I do know that there are many different ways to move through life.
I know some people who love having a house, a car, and kids and do it very well. I know others who have all of that, too, and they feel trapped and miserable. I know people in my situation who hate that, too.
So, in the end, it is all individual.
Most importantly, we don’t let certain people's standards or cultural norms dictate our lives without first considering them.
Take some time to reflect on how you live your life, what is yours and what comes from people and social norms that were programmed into you without your consent.
