Confidence is the trust you have in your own abilities, decisions, and worth. It’s not about never feeling doubt—it’s about moving forward despite it. Confidence isn’t arrogance, nor is it about always being right; it’s about knowing that whatever happens, you can handle it.
Recently, I was out for coffee with a friend, and he said something that really resonated with me:
"The reason I’m successful is because I bet on myself—no one else. I believe I can achieve what I’ve set out to do."
Not long after, I was speaking to another friend about our relationships with our spiritual teachers. I told her:
"At the end of the day, I trust myself and my own decision-making. My teacher might have a different view, and that’s okay. I trust my intuition and guidance, and that’s what matters."
I meet too many people who are willing to give away their decision-making power to others. Seeking guidance, mentorship, and support is valuable—sometimes essential—but it must go hand in hand with developing our own confidence. We have to trust that even if we “fail,” we can cope with whatever comes next.
You strengthen your confidence by making small decisions independently and, over time, building up to bigger ones. By becoming really good at something. By caring less about what others think of you and focusing more on what you think of yourself.
Other ways to cultivate confidence:
Keeping promises to yourself, no matter how small.
Acknowledging your progress instead of fixating on how far you have to go.
Putting yourself in situations that challenge you and learning through experience.
Allowing yourself to make mistakes and proving to yourself that you can recover from them.
Confidence isn’t something you’re given—it’s something you build. And the more you bet on yourself, the stronger it becomes.
