A dirty little secret
š„ I have a confession to make: I rarely read or watch the news of any kind.
No news watching or reading has been going on for years, and this now also includes podcasts. I used to be an avid podcast listener, and I have learnt a lot from them. I have now basically stopped them too. I have come to believe we donāt need this much stimulation.
Our body, mind and spirit need rest authentically connect with ourselves, others and the divine.
Iām working on desensitising myself to this need for overstimulation. The need for the dopamine hit is still strongly there.
AND HERE ARE MY REASONS:
I find that the news is often way too overwhelming for my body, mind and spirit.
Most news distracts us from authentically connecting with ourselves, others and the divine.
The news is creating more division than unity.
No one needs to be āinformedā about what is going on everywhere all the time.
Someone will tell me if anything is super important, like a pandemic lockdown or a new war.
I think it is better to learn from books. Iām an avid reader. Yes, it will take longer; however, the information will be more in-depth, also, hopefully not on a digital device.
The news distracts us from talking to others about our feelings.
Do you read or watch the news? If so, why?
Iām not suggesting we should not stay updated on areas that we find interesting. Iām finding it fascinating to understand how AI will impact all of our lives. At the same time, I think it is vital that we minimise it as much as possible.
Instead, we should spend our time in nature, we other people and in silent contemplation. You will learn more about life and living from that.

How can I free myself from the addiction of watching the news, and what meaningful activity can I fill my time with instead of?
